At Home In Advent

The following words for reflection are taken and adapted from “At Home In Advent - A domestic journey from Advent to Epiphany” from Gordon Giles (BRF - Bible Reading Fellowship). The entire book is available from Eden.co.uk and would be recommended to get a fuller experience of this time of devotion and meditation.

The purpose of these devotional is to give you something of an everyday object or motion which can focus our thinking through Advent. There are 3 sections:

  • Travelling in Advent
  • At Home in Advent
  • The run up to Christmas

This is a journey…

Boat: sailing through life

Read: 1 Timothy 1:18 - 19

Have you ever wondered what Paul’s missionary journeys would’ve been like to actually be with him? Think of the number of times he would be under sail…and the couple of times he was shipwrecked. As people who live on a wee island, how many have been on a wee boat or even a big one!?

Everything can be grand when the waters are still, just sitting there letting life pass you by… until a wave or wind comes along and tips you over.

Paul reminds Timothy to hold steady, be alert, as others have been shipwrecked in faith.

We are in this big boat journey of life together. Are we ready for what may come our way? We know in Jesus our salvation - where the lifejackets are! What about those of our friends and family? Do we cry man overboard or turn a blind eye as we enjoy our divine cruise…

Are you a good sailor or do you get a little queasy?

Have you ever been on a cruise…noticed the staff running it?

Do you know anyone you can throw that lifejacket to?

Pray for all those travelling on ferries and working on boats today.
